Many nations in Latin America and Asia are taking their cues from the GDPR, and enacting new security and privacy laws, or amending extant ones, changing the way companies will be able to obtain data in cross-border investigations. During a recent WilmerHale webinar, firm attorneys D. Reed Freeman Jr. and Nicole Ewart analyzed the key provisions of various laws in those two regions. This article, the first of two, discusses regulatory and enforcement developments in Latin American countries and the second article in the series will cover developments in Asia, including considerably heavy data transfer activity there.
