Beam Suntory Is the Latest Victim of the Beverages Industry in India

Beam Inc., now known as Beam Suntory Inc., has settled SEC charges that its Indian subsidiary made improper payments to government officials. While the settlement amount is relatively small – a little over $8 million – the case highlights just how risky the alcoholic beverage industry in India is, as well as the importance of M&A anti-corruption due diligence even if the deal is between a non-U.S. acquiror and a U.S target.
