AAG Benczkowski Wants Prosecutors to Be Compliance Sophisticates

At the recent American Conference Institute’s Annual International Conference on the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act held in Oxon, Maryland, Assistant Attorney General Brian Benczkowski made clear that one of the DOJ’s greatest assets is the sophistication of its prosecutors. “In citing the achievements of the past year, I would be remiss if I didn’t give credit where the credit is truly due – to the career prosecutors, law enforcement agents, and supervisors who have worked tirelessly over the past months and years to build and prosecute these cases,” Benczkowski said in prepared remarks at the conference. Chris Cestaro, the new head of the DOJ’s FCPA Unit, agreed, asserting that his Unit’s success is the result of the “incredible hard work” of the Unit’s prosecutors. “Their commitment to the job, to the mission and to doing the right thing is something I’m incredibly proud of,” he said. The Anti-Corruption Report spoke with members of the defense bar for their take on how prosecutors are approaching compliance, settlement negotiations and international cooperation.
